Background
Hong Kong International School (HKIS) was founded in 1966. The school is dedicated to building a community that values compassion and service to others. Although teaching is grounded in a Christian philosophy, children of all religions are welcome to attend.
The multicultural student body is made up of over 3,000 students from more than 40 nationalities around the world. Around 40 percent of students are American, 20 percent are from Hong Kong, and the remaining 40 percent come from other nationalities.
HKIS accepts applications from 1 May to 1 October each year for Reception 1 to Grade 5, and from 1 May to 1 November for Grades 6 to 12. If a particular grade is oversubscribed, HKIS does not use a formal waitlist. Instead, applicants join a wait pool. When a place is available, HKIS fills it according to a formal priority system rather than by how long an applicant has been waiting. The school weighs factors such as class balance, academic profile, family profile, and fit with the school's Student Learning Results.
