Background
The International Montessori School (IMS) has four campuses across Hong Kong Island: Stanley, South Horizons, Mid-Levels, and Aldrich Bay. Founded in 2002, IMS now teaches close to 1,000 children from about 40 nationalities, and it describes itself as the first accredited bilingual Montessori school in Hong Kong and Greater China. IMS designed its dual-language Montessori curriculum to focus on child development and language fluency.
Classes at IMS are led by two teachers: one English-speaking and one Putonghua-speaking. IMS employs AMI-trained teachers in every classroom. IMS encourages bilingualism, and children learn to understand, speak, read, and write both languages from an early age.
IMS gained full accreditation from the International Montessori Council (IMC) in 2012. It was one of the first Montessori schools in Asia to do so. IMS accepts applications for children aged 1 to 14 throughout the year via its online admissions portal.
Typical class sizes are around 24 to 25 students. The teacher-to-student ratio in Casa classrooms (ages 3 to 6) is about 2:25. The flagship Stanley campus opened in 2014 as a waterfront facility of around 50,000 square feet (4,645sqm). It has capacity for roughly 700 students.
